Aescin (also known as escin) is a natural mixture of saponins extracted from the seeds of the horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). The main biologically active compound in this mixture is β-aescin, which is largely responsible for the mixture’s medicinal effects. It has anti-inflammatory, vasoconstrictor, vasoprotective, and anti-edematous properties.
