Introduction

Carbenicillin is a semisynthetic penicillin-type antibiotic (carbenicillin disodium) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacteriolysis in susceptible organisms. It exhibits expanded activity against certain Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and retains activity against some Gram-positive species.

Uses

• Treatment of urinary tract infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms (including some Pseudomonas strains).
• Management of respiratory, skin, soft tissue, bone and joint infections when caused by susceptible bacteria.
• Occasionally used in clinical settings for septicemia due to susceptible organisms.
